  5. Here’s a drawing i did on the back of a notepad a while back. I have a thing for drawing on materials which were put together with the sole intent of being functionally adequate. Even though it is just a small sketch it can feel extremely liberating, as well as challenging, which is fantastic. It’s like resurrecting the feelings you had as a kid which caused you to draw on your book covers, shoes, notebooks or even your desk… then combining them with your learned understanding of technique and composition. Fun things are bound to happen, and in many cases, “doodles” such as these can inspire more refined creations. Don’t be afraid to let the idea out wherever you see it (within reasonable respect of others of course). Those are creative opportunities you may never get back.

  6. Working on a design idea… I’ve always found drawing typography to be very relaxing and somewhat therapeutic. Simple sketches like these help me jump start a creative process, even if they don’t end up being the finished product. I’m a firm believer that the creative path you take on a project is different depending on how you start. Simple acts such as physically drawing (instead of just jumping on your computer) and brainstorming with another human being (designer or not) bring about ideas that would otherwise be overlooked.
